The Renaissance Faire Project
In this whole grade level project, we will explore the Renaissance (1300 ~ 1600) together. We got the opportunity to choose a character from the Renaissance and embody it. If you have more questions about this project here's the project description: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1R7vGTDztprAHQ_RlHbdqseRKJ7e1bM_0OlPvc_ulolk/edit
In this project we were assigned different things in all classes but it was one same project. In English class we got to create a writing piece that was related to our character. For exampleif you were a play writer you had to write a scene of a play. I was Hernan Cortes a conquistador and Explorer. Since I was an explorer and my character wrote journal entries and letters to the king I decided to write a relation letter about the Aztec empire and experiences in Mexico ( there's a link to this letter at the end). I think the best part was doing the writing piece. Since I really want to improve my writing I was very excited about this. Although, I knew that old English is very confusing it was a great way to challenge myself to write. I was really proud of my writing and I found some key points about writing it that really helped me get through the process. Being able to get feedback was great and have enough work time. Even though I would of liked to have more background on how to write in old English in our warm ups. Yet, being able to figure this out on my own was really a benefit and I don’t complain because of my love for writing. In our History class we did lots of interesting things.
We had an introduction on how the life in the Renaissance was. It definitely gave me an idea on how my character should behave, act and dress. I learned a lot about the social classes and how the Renaissance was truly a change in the world. It has definitely influenced most our modern day world and help shape it. I am really fascinated by how this period in time was a literal pause to stop and try to change things. I am still interested in learning more on my own because I just love history and I advanced in my learning. In some way we got the opportunity to include math in this project which I thought was amazing, and I’m glad we got to include math in this project. I wasn’t able to present my game but the game chosen for my guild was similar to mine. I was really satisfied with our outcome. When we got to introduce our game to the people it was really fun to explain how games in the past used probability and in between we got to add some historical event on it. I was proud of the results because people really enjoyed it and were fascinated by how probability fits in this projects, I was fascinated myself. I don't take Spanish yet and I know that I don't have the class but my character was Spanish. When I was doing my research there was many familiar things. My character explored Mexico and it was definitely fun to get to read some articles in Spanish. Since I am a Spanish speaker I decided to do the cover of my relation letter in Spanish. It was definitely something I wanted to do since the beginning of the project. I was really excited about the writings of Hernán Cortés and how old Spanish was. So definitely read old Spanish and including it on my written piece. Chemistry has been my favorite class of the semester and we got to create such a creative product in this class. Not only was I able to learn it but I took the opportunity to help my classmates. I am very happy with my final result. We were able to create a keychain of a molecule while using math tools such as dilation. This project was based on our project groups in chemistry, mine was the water quality group and I chose water as my molecule and I had a lot of stress making this but I did it and I was happy.
If I put myself on a scale from one to ten on the difficulty of this project I would say five. It was definitely something new and getting everything done was definitely a challenge. It was challenging to a point that I was worried if I was doing ok in my work. Of course I love writing and math which were the biggest components of this project, but I was scared I wasn’t doing it right. I tried to get everything done on time and I did which made me focus more on how I can embody my character in the best way possible. I was sometimes afraid that my guild wasn’t decorated enough but it all came together in the end. I was proud of my guild mates and I was very proud of myself for working hard and enduring any stress. I gave my best in parts of my writing and definitely the presentation of my character. I wasn’t stressed but I knew I should be yet at the same time I wasn’t sure if I was stressed. This project made me realize that I can improve my organization skills to a great extent and that my planning can do great things. It’s a matter of dedication and hard work but at the end even the smallest things made an improvement in my progress as a learner.
I believe the part of how to write the individual writing pieces was the most challenging part and aspect of this project. I was really confused on how to write in the old English way and how much we had to write. I am student that is still working on labeling my writing and writing to an extent. If we knew more about the grammar or sentence structures back then it would be easier to write it. I was really lost when I was researching what I wanted to write because the documents would often be in old English and Spanish. Of course I’ve been introduced to Spanish and completely understood what I was reading, however I knew that when it was time to translate I didn’t know how to put it in sentences. Many used a old English translator yet I am passionate about writing and wanted to learn myself. It was definitely something challenging but I was able to achieve it. I won’t say it was perfect or good but I gave my best. I am sure of my hard work because at critique sessions I received positive comments from students and teachers.
I was able to receive feedback on my writing which I thought to be weonderful. This is always the best part of writing assignments. I truly want to learn as an English learner how I can better my writing. I seek ways to improve and try my best to present good drafts. When we had the critique sessions I received many compliments on my writing! I was profoundly happy with my work and exceeding my classmates expectations. I am that type of student that always has something more to say and ends up writing three pages. I was not confident about having so much writing but the critique sessions gave me more confidence to present my work as it is. Receiving support from teachers, friends and classmates was definitely a positive impact on my final draft which was very similar to my first one.
I am very proud of my writing. It was a long process to figure out old English but I did it. I was very happy with my outcome and I am sure I gave my best. I wrote a total of 3 pages, which made a little scared, which I believe portrayed everything I wanted to say, according to my research. I thought I wouldn’t be able to do this because sometimes I do struggle with my writing in modern English as a bilingual student. I wrote it in Spanish first because my research was mostly in Spanish. I encountered many English documents and that definitely helped me write and translate my draft. I was able to identify some of the key points of the old sentence structure. I am super happy of my results and I received many positive and encouraging comments on my work.
When we got to Exhibition I am happy with what I displayed. I’m sure I have said this and I am very happy with the results of our Guild, of course we could’ve made it better if there was more time but we had limited things we could present. I was a bit disappointed at that fact because I know we could’ve done something bigger. Yet, what we were able to present it was good, I was really proud of my work and my progress. I was able to talk about my character with confidence and present what I had. I worked hard for it and I am satisfied knowing that people were amazed with our project and presentation of work as well as the effort we put into it.
Exhibition! This is always the best part of our projects, that we get to talk to people about it! I believe I say this because this is my first time coming into a school that does this. At public schools you only talk about what you’ve learned at parent teacher conferences or class presentations. I am super privileged to be able to be exposed to present my work more often and gain confidence on public speaking. It’s always so fun to share what we’re doing at school and how we work hard to give a presentable Exhibition. At the time of Exhibition I was very excited and I didn’t doubt my hard work. I received lots of compliments on my knowledge and writing. A few people mentioned that if they would grade me they would give me an A, which boosted my confidence even more. At the game stations I got this person who really wanted to know what our game meant, since the game had specific dates and events in the Renaissance, and I ended up encouraging her to go check out other guilds that were related to our game and she really loved that. I knew some people weren’t at their guild at the time they were supposed to and I gave my best to not leave neither of the stations alone even if I wasn’t supposed to because I know that a responsible leader should do that. I gave my best to present a great guild at Exhibition.
What I would change about this exhibition is the time frame to start to talk to our guild was short. We didn’t have much to present besides I feel like we were missing something. We were definitely in the renaissance spirit but I wish we could make this even more entertaining or at least have more activities.
There's so much that I learned about the lasting impact of the Renaissance. Of course, there’s so much that I learned that will always stick to my inner historian. I am very happy that we never stop learning, I was really excited to learn and to add more work into my schedule. Sometimes it’s good to stay busy and being able to research. This was definitely a project that interested me and I will never forget about how SPain had so much impact on how Mexico is today. Which is something that I should care about. Being able to obtain so much knowledge from one single project is even more fun when I get to share it with people. This time period has definitely impacted our world and I continue to see it today.
