How would it feel if you had served your country for years, putting your mental and physical health on the line only to be thrown away? There are songs about you and your comrades, so why are you waiting months for help? I had to put myself into this perspective for our “We Happen” project, my group learned the harsher truths of America’s Veteran Affairs system. In this project, I worked in a group of 6 people; Nia Asbill, Mariah Perez, Chloe Reeves, Viviana Duran and Paulina Sanchez. Our group focused on veterans and we were all surprised on how big this issue actually is. I learned about management and leader skills through taking charge of research, presenting and making campaign ideas.
The first way we learned was researching the issue. Since its government run there are plenty of news sources covering it from time to time. We covered multiple issues on Veteran Affairs and discussed the nonprofits that are already in motion for veterans. Something that struck out to me was that Veteran Affairs actually had veterans die because of serious medical conditions that they couldn’t cover in time. There are hundreds of thousands cases on this and somehow it’s still a smaller issue. Since we were such a large group and had a lot of information to cover, we were able to split up based off what we wanted to do. This helped our efficiency and our ability to meet deadlines and it was a group method I had never tried before. A large part of our project was also presenting our ideas as a group and being able to work off of what the others said.
We had three presentations throughout the entire project; One was to the class, another to the entire grade, and the final was to a group of panelists from nonprofits. We got a lot of feedback from all of our audiences, the main two being body language and voice volume. Throughout our presentations we improved each time and we worked on it independently. This process let us grow in our individual ways while still improve our entire project and work cohesively. Another way we could’ve improved our presentation was critiquing within our own group and working together on our weaknesses.
The final way I learned was through the campaigns and the logo. I mainly focused on both throughout the entire project, I drew the logo and played a large part in the campaigns. This connects to management skills because I was able to step in when the rest of my group was unavailable. Later once I had gotten the main points in I included the rest of my group and was able to create a clearer plan.I did do the logo alone but I got some concepts from other classmates. I believe something we could’ve done differently was making sure we filled all requirements together. The main issue was not checking on the requirements which forced me to do the campaigns alone initially. As I mentioned earlier, I think it still taught me about leadership because I still made sure my group was included.
This project has helped me grow in an area that I’ve always had issue with. Communicating in general has always been tough for me so being able to be leadership position shows me improvement. All throughout this project I’ve been able to hone this new skill through research, presenting and creating campaigns. I think that because I struggled with this so much in middle school it’s a personal goal for me. I overall, learned a lot from this project and was able to work on major goals in my life.
