Our newest and most recent project we've worked on it's the Roller Coaster and Revolutions. My group members were Chloe Reeves and Ariana Reyes. We got the opportunity to explore the Mexican Revolution and me and the members were differently divided to work on different sections of the project. We had discussions to settle our plan for this project and took our members' ideas to come up with plans to make our project's outcome better. I really enjoyed this project me and my group got the chance to go through a journey of a character fictionally living through the revolution. My team mates also were able to build a roller coaster and connect it with the our story that we created. We all agreed on the tasks that were distributed by us together as a team. I think that some things we could improve is managing the time because I knew that if we had better time management we could have done more things that would make the outcome even better. Even though there's some things to fix and improve, our roller coaster's outcome was better than I expected and I was really proud of my team.
In regards to Humanities we had the opportunity to learn about our revolution. My revolution was the Mexican revolution and I got to learn so many interesting things throughout this project. Based on this revolution we had to write a Choose Your Own Adventure story which included seven different layers making a story about a young teenager living during the given revolution. This character had to establish his/her perspectives on this revolution and this choose your own adventure had to start with a main layer and the reader got the chance to pick which way they wanted to continue with. It was a really creative way to make the students familiarize with their revolution and I had a lot of fun writing this story as well as making the art, because I got to make the art for all the layers of the story which was also something I enjoyed. This connected us as a team to our revolution. We also had to make and prepare three presentations that addressed the revolution. These presentations were divided within our team of three to explain the revolution in more detail. We got to go over the main questions of the revolution for example Who was fighting, where, why, what, how and if there's any revolutionary ideas that still exist today. These presentations made us gain knowledge about our revolution which helped us if our CYOA (Choose Your Own Adventure) story in various ways. The presentations also made us learn independently and made us also research and learn things we've never learned before and we also learned how to format our presentations. Throughout this project Humanities made us improve in writing and building connections with our subjects not only in this project but also n future ones.
In Physics we got to make an Energy Audit. This relates with what we have been recently learning in class. Physics may seem so difficult, but actually if you want to learn you can learn no matter the circumstances. I was really interested in energy since the beginning of the unit. I've learned how to calculate and solve for energy which was very useful for this project. Throughout the process of this roller coaster I noticed how physics works when the marble rides the roller coaster. Some of my teammates were stressed about not being able to solve and finish the energy but after our teacher made warm ups for us in class it clarified many students questions which helped them finish their energy audit. For me it was really fun to work on the energy audit, perhaps my audit was used to be displayed in our roller coaster exhibition along with our revolution coaster. I think many people were afraid that they weren't going to understand a bit of physics like me but practice makes better. Throughout the project we got the opportunity to see physics or energy work in all the things we were doing.
Engineering was such an experience. In this class I think all of the students had fun. We got to plan out our roller coasters and build them from scratch. We first started with some prototyping. A prototype is a low quality draft of your original idea. My group created a prototype of our roller coaster using materials like cardboard, tape and paper to construct a rough draft of our roller coaster also known as a prototype. My group had an idea of how we wanted our roller coaster to look like and comparing it to outcome it was pretty much what we wanted it to be like. We used a base of a used cardboard and used paper and tape to make our supports, we made our track made out of paper and taped down all of our supports to our base. We also learned the introductions to blueprints that helped us later on with our math blueprints, which was another interesting thing we learned. We used design thinking which includes making your work with passion, that you know what to do and want to make it look good not minding the obstacles that you are going to face. Engineering helped us think a lot throughout this project not only on trying to build our roller coaster but in doing everything else, that we need to learn how to empathize, and make beautiful work with the help of our mind wanting to learn. We sure had so many difficulties building this roller coaster specially soldering. Using solder is so hard but it isn't impossible so that's one thing that helped me get through it. I got to use different tools I've honestly never used before like solder and the handsaw. Even though we took so much time building it at the end it was worth it and I enjoyed making this roller coaster as well.
I was really proud of my group and our outcome. I was really happy with our results, our roller coaster was able to perform a complete ride of the marble. Our decorations were so fun to make and I really loved our outcome, each of us worked really hard so I think at the end the compliments of our roller coaster and our success paid it all off. We also had fun displaying this at Belmont Park in our exhibition, people were often looking at our roller coaster and I personally invited them to try it themselves and I got to share the different categories and process of this project. Starting from our CYOA to our Energy Audit. I was very confident on our collaboration, work ethic, content knowledge and communication. I think that because our group had these we were able to get done in time and were able to have fun making it look incredible. Having all of these in you r team is very important always, they are the things that will lead your group to success. My group was able to know about the revolution and show it in the presentation, and showed collaboration in the building of the roller coaster and finally showed communication which we used a lot throughout the project dividing the roles to work in different areas to make this project possible.
